QUEERSPACE collective’s mission is to create space for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth to feel safe, supported and empowered to be their true selves. QUEERSPACE'S vision is for all 2SLGBTQIA+ youth to have a network of support that helps them build pride in who they are, where they come from and where they want to go.

Hillcrest spoke with Development & Communications Director Dustin Erikstrup of QUEERSPACE about how The Watkins Building works for their organization.

Why did you choose The Watkins Building?

We chose the Watkins Building because it provides an accessible, welcoming and secure environment for our young people and staff. The location offers convenient access to public transportation, major freeways, bike routes and neighborhood amenities, making it easy for our community to reach our programs. We especially valued the privacy and flexibility of multiple private entrances, including a dedicated entrance for youth program participants, as well as features like gender-neutral bathrooms, storage space and a community of like-minded tenants. These elements help create a safe, supportive space where young people can feel a true sense of belonging.

What do you enjoy most about being part of The Watkins Building community?

We love the eclectic mix of tenants and the welcoming atmosphere throughout the building. The shared coworking areas, seating areas and gathering spaces create opportunities to connect outside of our own space. The Hillcrest team has also been incredibly responsive and helpful, providing timely support and communication whenever questions or building needs arise.

What is your favorite neighborhood amenity?

We love the accessibility of the neighborhood, including bus lines along Franklin and Lyndale and easy access to major highways. We also enjoy being close to great local spots like Wedge Co-Op and Baba’s, along with other restaurants and bars.

What is your favorite part of your space at Watkins?

We love having a dedicated youth center and office space that allows our team to collaborate, connect, and expand our programming. The café area has become a special gathering place where we can share meals with staff and young people, while the high ceilings, natural light, and open layout create a vibrant and welcoming environment.

Was there anything unique about your space that Watkins helped accommodate?

The build-out of our space was a true community effort, with volunteers contributing painting, cabinetry and the finishing touches that made it feel like home. One of the features we value most is the private entrance and secure after-hours access, which allows our community to gather in a space where they feel safe, comfortable and welcome.

How has being located at Watkins impacted your business?

The Watkins Building gave us the opportunity to create a true home for our organization. Our build-out was a collaborative process, with volunteers helping complete many of the finishing touches, including painting, cabinetry, and other details that made the space feel uniquely ours. Together, we created an environment designed specifically to support our community.

What do you like about working with Hillcrest?

The Hillcrest team is very responsive to service requests and quick to provide updates about any building alerts or issues. We appreciate their communication, support and commitment to making sure tenants have a positive experience at Watkins.
